Ready.

It's late. But I feel the nagging desire to tell you all that I am packed and ready to leave for camp on Saturday. Even though tomorrow is only Friday.
I filled my new green backpack with soft striped tee shirts and Maurice Sendak.

I am so ready to see Mandy.

Poem.

for once in your life, can you do something for me,
can you value yourself,
can you breathe deep and stand straighter, taller and recognize that you are worth something,
that you don’t actually need
someone else
to be you?
so go.
jump off that dock into that lake alone,
drink that tea wrapped in that blanket in the morning alone,
discover paris and london and budapest alone,
scream at the top of your lungs on the top of that mountain alone,
build something important alone,
memorize poetry alone,
save someone alone,
learn alone,
create alone,
live alone,
cry alone,
laugh alone,
be
alone.
because being alone is not a sin,
it does not mean that you are worthless,
it is simply a state of being
that in fact defines a certain persistence that only the bold have.
in fact, being alone defines a soul that values itself.
so go.
I found this the other day, on my weekend excursion with Père and Mandy. We were in the middle of an hour of driving, crushed beneath the weight of the California redwoods forest and the anticipation of the sea, and I found it in my black moleskine. Tucked in the back with the smallest paintings. I wrote it in the throes of an especially trying week not too long ago, but when I was younger still and just learning that who I am and what I believe is not all godforsaken. For so long I stood on the cusp of despair in my walk with Christ, everyone's judgments smashing on the small of my back, and then I let go. I wrote things like this when I let go. When I discovered it was okay to not be perfect and that grace is real. When I fell in love with a carpenter and confessed it more. When I gave up and in and became better.
Do better.
I live by those words.
Do better, and, so go.

Vendredi/Samedi/Dimanche

I spent this weekend with my older sister and my brother-in-law and my younger sister and my niece to be. There were brownies and coffee and coffee and coffee.
And my best friend.
K showed up. I was tired as ever and worried about French homework and in mid-laughter when she walked through the door in her red shoes. I didn't know, I didn't realize it was her. It was like a dream. I really believed it was a dream, because if you knew how many times I imagine her walking through a door where I am, you might be sad for me. But it was real.
It was real this time.
We sat shoulder to shoulder on a yellow couch and I was too happy.

I learned so much this last week. Here is one of my best things.
You will never truly be happy until you realize that your life is not about you.
Here is my worst thing.
I want to make people laugh. I don't know how to do that, and never before this Friday have I wanted more than ever to make people laugh.

Life is all colors and bliss these days.
I don't know what I want. I don't know who is going to walk through my door. I don't know what to do.
And that is not a sin.
Not knowing is not a sin. Because my life is not about me. The most fabulous thing about that though is that I know it. So here's to coffee and making things and going places and seeing people and "Madeline" and not knowing.

Here is to not being sure.

Practice makes tired.

Dear Fleur.
I went to Church this morning. The one thing that stuck out to me:
"Why die for someone who's already dead?"
We actually serve a risen Lord. And that is incredible.

Done.

I am done with today.
I was at school for 9 hours. And I didn't even do my Art History exam because my teacher got sick and it was canceled.
I thought about youth this morning. And drank iced tea while Mandy was in math.
I also had some good stuff in my head about Joel. But I can't write it right now. I'm not articulate enough.
Finals is in 1 week. Bah. My last essay is on the effects of married women learning to cook. I'm going Julia Child on my teacher.
We'll see how it goes.
Tomorrow:
Skype date with Hana Rachel.
Baking.
Homework.
Art History cramming with Mandy.
Laundry.
Homework.
Bicycling.
Track&Field in the high school. Hallway runs.
Homework.
Tea.
Prayer.
Homework.
Alright. Goodnight. I am just done with today.

I wreck myself.

I was with my sisters today. After church we went to Bend. We had to pick up Mandy. (I wore these old eyeglasses frames that I want to take to Costco so they can put lenses in.) And then we met with Derrick. And he gave us free chai tea. And it made me glad.
We went all over downtown. In an antique shop and other places. I almost keeled over when I saw the spoon rings in the antique shop. I love rings. Then I looked at my hands. I hate my hands.
I destroy them.
I don't really do it on purpose. I guess I don't. Sometimes I forget. And I do.
I bite my fingernails. I make them ugly. I tear at my fingers. I make them bleed. I do it till they hurt and the skin around them swells.
I hate it.
I don't know how to stop. I've tried almost everything. Lemon juice. Nail polish. Hot sauce. Candy. Gum. Alcohol. Rubber bands on my wrists. Notes on my palms. All of it. I've tried. And I think I've almost given up. I think I believe my hands will always look like this.
I had a dream the other night that it was my wedding. And the photographer was taking pictures of my husband's and my hands. His were perfect. Strong. Big. Manly hands. Mine were disgusting. Scabbed over. Torn. Swollen. Broken. Smaller. They made me want to cry. They were so ugly in my dream.
I woke up and freaked out.
And I've been freaking out ever since. Like today. In the antique shop looking at the spoon rings and having a complex.
I hate my hands.
When it's cold in the morning, they hurt when I wake up. I don't think they're pretty. I don't know how to stop. My hands are terrible. And I'm usually really good at hiding it.
Not anymore.
The mornings are really cold lately.
I hate my hands.

I love writing about girls with small hands and slim fingers and fingernails like little pink polished pearls.

Hehe....I have a secret.

This is Mandy.
I love her.
And I just started pretty much the raddest present in the world for her.
She better like it.
♥.
